This is the first phase of a project that aims to invite cutting-edge creators to participate in a joint effort to develop software and hardware. We worked with U.S.-based artist/programmer Kyle McDonald to develop and showcase this software.
As a programmer, McDonald was one of the main developers of the creative coding software framework “openFrameworks” and is also known for his work as the developer of the “DIY 3D Scanning” project which sought to allow 3D scanning without specialized equipment. That said, he is also a very active artist, and has exhibited many installations and art projects utilizing software he has developed. In this project, we have developed and released the open-source “ProCamToolkit” suite of software that facilitates the use of “projection mapping”, a spatial production technique that is rapidly gaining popularity.
Recent and Upcoming
From August to November of 2011, Kyle McDonald was in residence at the YCAM working on a set of software that would simplify the process of calibration, the most intricate part of projection mapping. He also exhibited a few small pieces that served as demonstrations of the software. The software was then bundled into the “ProCam Toolkit” and released under an open source license.
